As part of a vast photographic experiment around the world, Catherine Merdy exhibited the first shots of her 2.X series at Zico House from 22 March to 01 April 2005.
Born in 1968, Catherine Merdy studied cinematography at the Ecole nationale Louis-Lumière and then joined the Ateliers d’Artistes de Besançon where most of her work is based. The photographic series 2 begun in 2000 is at the root of her recent project Par 2 la monde, which aims to confront the images of foreign cities with each other.
Playing with their formats, their origins and their juxtaposition, Catherine Merdy questions the images: 2.Beirut exhibits numerous photographic diptychs that freeze and compare moments of life, everyday life, ordinary gestures, signs and symbols of the urban setting. “One could explain the “2” by the simple fact that it is the association of two images, but the “2” is everywhere in the form as well as in the content: double look, mine, yours; the pair, the double, the couple, a choice,” explains the photographer to L’Orient-Le Jour.

ولدت كاثرين ميردي عام 1968، و درست التصوير السينمائي في Ecole nationale Louis-Lumière ثم انضمت إلى Ateliers d’Artistes de Besançon حيث تنتج وتعرض معظم أعمالها. تعتبر سلسلة الصور 2.X والتي بدأت عام 2000 أساس مشروعها الأخير Par 2 la monde والهادف إلى وضع صور المدن الأجنبية وجهاً لوجه.
من خلال التلاعب بأشكالها وأصولها وتجاورها، تقوم كاثرين ميردي باستجواب الصور: 2.Beirut تعرض العديد من الصور الدبتكية التي تجمد وتقارن لحظات الحياة اليومية والإيماءات العادية وعلامات ورموز البيئة الحضرية. كما تشرح المصورة ل-L’Orient: “يمكن للمرء أن يفسر “2” على أنه يدل على الارتباط بين صورتين، ولكن “2” موجودة في كل مكان سواءً في الشكل أو في المحتوى: نظرة مزدوجة، صورتي، صورتك، الإثنان، المزدوج، الثنائي، إختيار.”
