“Dressing-Readdressing”, for Mai Ghoussoub and Shaheen Merali, at Zico House
In 2003 from April fifteen to twenty-six, Zico House presented an installation under title of “Dressing-readdressing” by Mai Ghoussoub and Shaheen Merali, two “oriental” artists living in London. Mai nationality was Lebanese and Shaheen was Indian. This title is inspired by the play on the two expressions “Dressing” and “Read Dressing”.
After having dressed in oriental fashion – with hats “tarboush” and scrafs – some classic buildings in London and Vancouver, the two artists did the opposite in Beirut. They “tied” the Zico House building with a giant knot and dressed the entrance tree in tutus and demi-pointe shoes. A necktie made the columns of the second floor of Zico House a neck, and the shrub above the terrace adorned itself with brides. Mai Ghoussoub said “The goal of our work is to provide a reflection on identity”.
It is an installation that is not limited to the facade of Zico House. Indeed, the installation was about fifty books that are lined up on displays that surround the walls. However Mia explained that we still follow the same principle, we have westernized books with oriental subjects and vice versa. Also, true culture cannot claim that it has a unique origin and that its richness and legitimacy derives from a long interaction in human society.
Quite simply, Shaheed and Mai made the language of contrast by fusing the local with the global in an attempt to invite the reader to “a deeper, personal reading.” This exhibition-installation simplified the complex and frequent relationship between cultures.
Shaheen and Mai repeated what the first read like a parrot, Mai read a philosophical text translated into Arabic and Shaheen who knows nothing about Arabic repeated what she said, which created a laughing irony. Then Shaheen read a text in Indian which Mai repeated with a childish stutter. The language stuttered and deviated within the context of the idea-exposition, but both retained the rhythm and tone of the language. The meaning has deviated but the form is preserved.

“Dressing-Readdressing”, de Mai Ghoussoub et Shaheen Merali chez Zico House.
La Zico House présente, du 15 jusqu’au 26 Avril 2003, une installation intitulée “Dressing-Readdressing” signée Mai Ghoussoub et Shaheen Merali, deux artistes orientaux résidant à Londres. La première est libanaise, le second est Indien. Ce titre est inspiré du jeu sur les deux expressions “Dressing” et “Read dressing”.
Après avoir habillé à la mode orientale – de tarbouches et de voiles – quelques bâtiments classiques à Londres et à Vancouver, les deux artistes ont fait l’inverse à Beyrouth. Ils ont “cravaté” d’un nœud géant l’immeuble de Zico House et revêtu de tutus et de demi-pointes l’arbre de l’entrée. Une cravate a fait des colonnes du second étage de Zico House un cou, et l’arbuste situé au-dessus de la terrasse est orné par des mariées. “Le but de notre travail est de provoquer une réflexion sur l’identité” affirme Mai Ghassoub.
C’est une installation qui ne se limite pas à la façade de Zico House. En effet, à l’intérieur, une cinquantaine d’ouvrages sont alignés sur des présentoires qui ceinturent les murs. “Toujours en suivant le même principe, on a occidentalisé les livres à sujets orientaux et vice versa” expliqua Mai Ghoussoub. Aussi, la vraie culture ne peut pas prétendre qu’elle possède une origine unique et que sa richesse et sa légitimité découle d’une longue interaction dans la société humaine.
Tout simplement, Shaheed et Mai ont fait la langue de contraste en fusionnant le local avec le global dans une tentative d’inviter le lecteur à “une lecture plus profonde et personnelle”. Cette exposition-installation a simplifié la relation complexe et fréquente entre les cultures.
Shaheen et Mai ont répété ce que le premier a lu comme un perroquet, Mai a lu un texte philosophique traduit en arabe et Shaheen qui ne sait rien en arabe répéta ce qu’elle a dit, ce qui a crée une ironie riante. Puis Shaheen a lu un texte en Indien que Mai l’a répété avec un bégaiement enfantin. La langue a bégayé et a dévié dans le context de l’idée-exposition, mais les deux ont conservé le rythme et le ton de la langue. Le sens a dévié mais la forme est conservée.

“الواجهة – التوجّه” لمي غصوب و شاهين ميرالي في “زيكو هاوس”
قدّم زيكو هاوس – من الخامس عشر لغاية السادس و العشرون من شهر نيسان ٢٠٠٣ – تجهيزا تحت عنوان “الواجهة-التوجه” للشرقيين المقيمين في لندن “مي غصوب” و”شاهين ميرالي”، الأولى لبنانية و الآخر هنديّ. و قد استوحي اسم التجهيز من اللعب على كلمتي “ارتداء” و “اعادة قراءة الملابس” فأصبحت العبارة “اعادة الارتداء بالقراءة”.
بعد الباس عدة مباني كلاسيكية في لندن و فانكوفر – طرابيش و مناديل – على الطريقة الشرقية، عكس الفنانان عملهما في بيروت. لقد لقد ألبسا مبنى زيكو هاوس رابطة عنق عملاقة، و ألبسا شجرة المدخل تنانير قصيرة و زينة. “كرافات” على طول مبنى زيكو هاوس جعلت من عامودي الطابق الثاني عنقا. و الشجرة الصغيرة التي تعلو المدخل عند التراس زيّنت بعرائس. و صرّحت مي غصوب: “الهدف من عملنا هو احداث انعكاس على الهويّة”.
هذا التجهيز لم يكتف فقط بواجهة زيكو هاوس. في الصالة زنّرت الجدران برفّ متواصل كأنّه جعل للصالة خصرا استحوذت فيه الكتب المكملة لفكرة العمل: كولاج لأغلفة كتب من ثقافات متعدّدة. حوالي خمسون كتاب قد اصطفّ على ذلك الرّفّ. و قد أعلنت مي غصوب: “دائما عند اتباع المبدأ عينه، غرّبنا الكتب ذات المواضيع الشرقيّة و العكس صحيح. أيضا الثقافة الحقيقية لا يمكنها أن تدّعي أبدأ أنها ذات أصل واحد فريد و أن ثراءها و مشروعيّتها مستمدان من تفاعل مديد في المجتمع الانساني”.
ببساطة شديدة أنجز شاهين و مي لغة التباين عبر دمج المحلي بالعالميّ في محاولة لدعوة القارئ ﺇلى “قراءة أكثر عمقا و شخصيّة”. و قد بسّط العرض – التجهيز العلاقة المعقدة و المتواترة بين الثقافات.
قام كل من شاهين و مي أثناء التجهيز بترداد ما يقرأه الأول على نحو ببغاوي، فقرأت مي نصا فلسفيا مترجما الى العربية و راح شاهين الذي لا يعرف العربية يكرر ما تقوله فأحدث ذلك مفارقة ضاحكة، ثمّ قرأ شاهين نصا بالهندية رددته مي بتلعثم طفوليّ، فتلعثمت اللغة و زوّغت في سياق الفكرة – العرض، لكن ظلّ الاثنان محافظين الى حدّ ما على ايقاع اللغة و نبرتها. فقد زاغ المعنى و لكن بقي الشكل.
